Carpet comes in many different styles, colors, textures, as well as fiber types.  The main fiber types are, polyester, nylon, olefin, wool, and triexta (also known as Mohawk Smartstrand).

Polyester: Polyester is less durable than nylon and smartstrand but is inherently more stain resistant than nylons. Polyester is one of the less resilient fiber types, which means it doesn't "bounce back".

Nylon: Nylon carpet has been known for being one of the most resilient fibers.  It will bounce back better than other fiber types in high traffic areas, but it is more prone to stains.  Some fiber manufacturers are now engineering nylon fibers with a built in stain resistance.

Olefin:  Olefin is most often found in Berber style and outdoor carpet but is sometimes used in other styles as well.  Olefin is very stain resistant to any water based stains but oil based products can stain it.  Olefin only absorbs about one tenth of one percent of its weight in water, which is why it is a good option for outdoor carpets.  Olefin fibers are a durable fiber but they are not very resilient, meaning in high traffic areas they tend to mat down and not return to their original shape.

Wool: Wool is one of the oldest fibers used in carpet.  Wool is a very durable and resilient fiber but can stain easily. Wool is also very flame retardant. It is one of the most expensive fiber types due to production costs.

Triexta: Triexta is a very stain resistant carpet that often times can be simply cleaned with water.  It is also a very durable fiber, which some consider to be as durable as some nylons. Triexta is also a green product due to it partially being made from corn glucose instead of petroleum.

Cleaning:  Most manufacturers recommend sweeping high traffic areas daily and all other areas at least once a week with a quality sweeper.  All carpet should be professionally carpet cleaned every 12 -16 months to get the most out of your carpet and also insure that your warranty stays intact from the manufacturer.
